How to get started
Wizard is multiplayer! You can play with a total of 2-6 players. To get started, enter a name for yourself (ex: "wizard-player-100") and a room name. The room name can be anything you like (ex: "Joan's room" 1). If you're playing with others, they can join your game by using the same room name.
Once you select Play Wizard, you'll see the other players who have joined the room and an option to Start Game. Be sure all other players have joined before you start the game. They will not be able to join after you start the game.
A typical round
Wizard has several multi-turn rounds. Each round, cards are dealt to each player starting from 1 card on the first round, adding another card each round until running out of the deck's 60 cards on the last round. The number of total rounds depends on the number of players: 20 for 2-3 players, 15 for 4 players, 12 for 5 players, and 10 for 6 players.
A trump suit is randomly selected, which is used to determine the winner of a 'trick' (see 'Winning a trick'). This is shown in a small icon to the right of your name. If the trump card is empty or a joker, there is no trump card. If the trump card is a wizard, the dealer (👑) must choose the suit of the trump card for the round.
At the beginning of the round, starting to the left of the dealer (👑), each player will make a bid on the number of 'tricks' will be won by that player in the round. The bid can range from 0 to the total number of cards dealt in the round. Select your bid by clicking or tapping on the number corresponding to your bid.
Next, starting to the left of the dealer, players will complete a turn by placing one card on the table. Play a card by dragging it onto the table or, if you're not on a phone, by double-clicking it. Players must follow the suit of the first card played - except if you're playing a Wizard or Jester, which can be played at any time. If the player does not have that suit, then the player is free to play any card. If the first card played is a jester, the next non-jester card will be considered the first card played. If the first card played is a wizard, players do not need to follow any suit. If the first card played is a jester and the next card played is a wizard, players do not need to follow any suit.
Once each player has played a card, the player who won the trick can be determined (see 'Winning a trick'). The player who won the trick then starts the next turn.
Players will keep taking turns until everyone runs out of cards dealt for the round.
At the end of each round, scoring will be tallied based on tricks bid vs tricks won (see 'Scoring'), and the dealer will rotate to the next player. The scoreboard will pop up to inform you of your score.
Winning a trick
On a given turn, the player who won the trick is determined as follows: If a wizard is played, the first wizard played wins the trick. Otherwise, highest card of the suit of the trump card wins the trick. Otherwise, the highest card of the suit of the first card played wins the trick. If all jokers are played, the first joker played wins the trick.
At the end of a round, the scoring is calculated as follows: If you won the exact number of tricks that you bid, then you get 20 pts + (10 pts for each trick won). But, if you bid incorrectly, you lose 10 pts for each trick that you went over over or under.
